Making the College Admission Process about You

Making the College Admission Process about You

High School me personally in Anything Goes

Greetings from sunny Southern California! My title is Jessica Frey (informally known as J Frey) and we am a Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at USC. I was raised in Hollister, a tiny farm city in Northern Ca that has no affiliation whatsoever with the clothing store. I attended a large public school that is high over 3,000 students and somehow found my way to USC to learn theatre. My hope is that through sharing my very own experiences, I can give you some advice and help you feel at ease whenever you approach the school admission process.

Many of you visitors is deciding on college it, and I want to make sure you know this is going to be all about you before you know. It might feel a little weird and selfish for anybody who are constantly placing other’s needs before your own. But in order to help you make an informed university list and end up at a place where you belong and feel happy, you do require to create the college search process exactly about yourself.

I don’t know I was in high school I made a lot of my decisions based on what other people were doing and thinking about you, but when. It’s cool to put on pants that are red? Okay, maybe I will go get that pair I was eyeing at the mall weekend that is last. All the other kids within my class are using to College XYZ? Maybe We should too. My therapist claims I’d be good at engineering since I have like my calculus course? We wonder though I have NO IDEA what being an engineer is all about if I should apply to engineering, even. These were all genuine ideas I had because well as many others throughout that anxious and fall that is stressful of senior year.

While it is very easy (and quite often a very important thing) for outside influences to shape your decisions, the college procedure should be one where you let your very own thoughts and ideas navigate your alternatives. Listed here are three basic principles I do believe every senior high school pupil should retain in mind while they decide where they will connect with college:

Focus on facts rather than opinions. People form views about different universities and colleges, but you should really consider your very own thoughts for the educational schools plus the information you discover as you study the colleges that interest you. It is important that you are enthusiastic about a university because they provide a thing that you would like in your undergraduate experience- not just because others you know are fans of the college, or because of its well-known reputation.

Think about what you want in a college experience, and apply to schools correctly. It is now time for you yourself to be a happy and thriving student for you to think about what a college campus should have in order. Do you want to attend college in a big city or perhaps a college town that is rural? Would you like to study abroad in a particular country? What kind of activities do you desire to pursue outside the classroom? Do you want to have the chance to function closely with your professors? It has everything you’re looking for, add it to the list if you find a school you’ve never heard of but! It doesn’t matter if nobody from your family or school ever knew about the school just before your discovery. Maybe it’s a place where you will have an enjoyable college experience.

Take pleasure in the search process! The procedure of creating your university list could be a daunting task, but it can also be an experience that is enjoyable. This is your possiblity to learn as much as you can about the many colleges that are amazing universities across the united states. This is the time for you to explore the myriad of options and look closely at the colleges you’re considering.

I don’t write this web site to inform you shouldn’t listen to your parents, counselors, or peers. You might have wonderful resources at your disposal that provide great advice and understanding. Counselors know about a variety of colleges and may have the ability to tell you more about the ones that meet your criteria. Your parents are going to be able to help determine which schools will financially be within reach. You just have to make sure their advice also aligns with what you want in an university experience.

That said, we did buy and totally rocked the red jeans. We’ll admit if I could get in that I applied to a college I had no intention of attending just to see. I did get into the school, but at the end of the day that didn’t matter. It don’t make me feel better about myself plus it was quite really a waste of the time and cash. But I did follow my heart and became a theater major rather than an engineer, and I also’m so happy I did. More on that later.
