Thomas Russell Hillier McClatchie (1852 — 1886)

Australian Laszlo Abel arrived in Japan in 1976 in search of “noncommercial” martial arts. After trying out “ninjutsu” and finding it unsatisfactory, he turned to Yumio Nawa Sensei’s manrikigusari, or chain art. Unanswered questions about the roots of the art led Abel on a fascinating odyssey of historical research.
