Stanley Pranin’s 1989 book titled “The Aiki News Encyclopedia of Aikido” is now available for download by paid subscribers of the Aikido Journal Members Site. This book, long out of print, is a one-of-a-kind aikido reference work that includes more than 800 encyclopedia entries, a subject bibliography with author index, a dojo directory, a chronology of Morihei Ueshiba, and detailed contents of the back issues of Aiki News magazine published up to the time of the appearance of the book.
The cover used here is not the original one of the “Encyclopedia of Aikido.” It is a new design by the author that attempts to convey a more modern look and feel suitable to the times.
Our ability to once again make available this historical work completely bypassing the printing and distribution stages perfectly illustrates one of the main purposes of the Aikido Journal Members Site. It has now become possible to preserve and disseminate important materials that constitute our aikido heritage thanks to the wonder of the Internet. Such documents as this book would be doomed to obscurity in an earlier age to the detriment of the development of aikido.
